Sankyu (Brown Belt)
1.
The Phoenix. (ABC).
Right push.
A.) Step forward with left to cat; place left forearm into his grip, pin back of
his right wrist with right inside forearm, pull to chest; cross back in advance
45° forward left with right, place right fist under left elbow, grab right elbow
with left hand, push against his fingers with left; pin elbows tight to chest,
pivot and corkscrew down, with left.
B.) Step forward 45° right with right; place left forearm into his grip, pin his
right wrist with right crook of elbow on top to left forearm, (right forearm in
front), right fist below left elbow; pivot and kneel with left (right twist
upper body, push forward with left hand).
C.) Left grab. Step forward with right to cat, place right forearm in his
grip, counter grab his left fingers with left (thumb towards elbow), right
elbow, up and over his left forearm; cross back right with left; adjust stance
to maintain pressure, force him down; kneel with right.
2.
Swirling Leaves. (ABC). Left
- Right punch.
A.) Right crane hook left punch, left crane hook right punch, right front snap
kick groin; plant forward with right; pivot to fighting stance, right uppercut
jaw.
B.) Same as ‘A’; right rising elbow jaw.
C.) Start as ‘A’; plant forward behind his right foot, left hand to right wrist,
right T-claw face; circle right arm counter clockwise back and right dropping
elbow to heart; shuffle forward, right tiger claw to face, throw on back.
3.
Crossing Guard. (ABC). Rear
shoulder pinch/grab.
A.) Step right to naihanchi, grab top of his wrists, pull arms over head; step
forward with right, pivot to seisan (facing him), cross arms right on top; right
front snap kick to groin; plant forward with right to fighting stance, right
side elbow to left side of head.
B.) Step left to naihanchi, grab his wrists and cross back left with right;
pivot to fighting stance, chin to chest, under and crossing his arms; right
front snap kick to left knee, plant forward and pivot to fighting stance with
right, push forward with right arm and pull back with left, break right elbow;
circle right high rear supported elbow to face/low rear to ribs.
C.) Start as ‘A’; crescent step back with left to naihanchi, swing right arm
counter clockwise against his left arm, break right elbow; cross over in advance
with right, release left arm, raise right arm over head, crescent step with left
to naihanchi (behind him); swing broken arm behind his back to arm lock; sweep
or naihanchi kick with right; throw down on broken arm.
4. Bending
Reeds. (A1-3,B). Left -
Right push, punch, or grab.
A1.) Step forward with right, left strike to face, right outward brushing parry
left push, punch, or grab; pivot to fighting
stance, right inward parry and crane hook his right arm, left hand to guard;
sweep right arm counter clockwise and down; shuffle forward, continue motion,
right side elbow strike left side of head, left palm heel to right side head.
A2.) Start as ‘A1’; counter grab his right wrist, sweep right arm counter
clockwise downward past right hip, pivot forward to bow, left reverse knife hand
to back of head (Gv-16).
A3.) Start as ‘A2’; shuffle forward to half bow, left side elbow to head.
B.) Start as ‘A1’ to left push, punch, or
grab; continue motion, left inward parry, right outward parry counter grab right
push, punch, or grab; finish like ‘A2’.
5.
Sleeves of China. Set III. (A1-2,BC).
Two hand grab (behind).
A1.) Step back with right to fighting stance; circle right arm overhead knocking
his arms free; right four fingertip strike groin; shuffle forward, right side
elbow to head, right high rear supported elbow to face, shuffle again if
necessary. Bends over: circle right arm 360° and hammer fist back of neck.
A2.) Starts as ‘A1’, arms pinned; right reverse knife hand to left side of neck.
B.) Step back with right to fighting stance; circle right arm over and between
his arms, catch his right forearm in right armpit, step forward 45° left with
left, place left forearm against his upper right arm, our right fist on our left
inside forearm; cross back with right; pivot and kneel with left.
C.) Step back with right to fighting stance; lift right arm between his arms,
over his right forearm, grab his right fingers and bend them back with left
hand, step forward 45° left with left, pull down and in left with right forearm,
push forward and down right with left hand, to “Kenpo lock”; cross back with
right; pivot and left kneel.
6.
Twisting Vine. (AB). Left
push, punch, or grab.
A.) Step right with right to Bo, right inward parry, left outward parry and
catch; twist his left arm elbow up, pull towards left hip, right hand to guard,
left side kick to left ribs; plant forward to left half bow, continue pull with
left, right uppercut to left ribs; inverted right crane hook left crook of his
arm; (keeping arm pinned to chest), pivot 180° to half bow, left elbow to face.
B.) Start as ‘A’; pivot to left twisted stance, pull with left and right
uppercut to left elbow with right crook of arm, right elbow to left ribs;
maintain grip with left, circle right arm counter clockwise to right back
knuckle to neck; place both palms on top of his head; push down and left knee to
face.
7.
Encircling Arms. Set III. (ABCD).
Circling tackle.
A.) Cross back right with left, left palm to top of his head right hand
overhead; pivot to fighting stance, right knife hand strike to back of neck,
follow through; reverse, and chop to throat; right side kick to knee.
B.) Cross back right with left, left palm to top of his head, circle right arm
forward and up; allow to catch waist with left; pivot to fighting stance,
continue circle with right to uppercut position, break his left elbow; keep left
arm pinned to side, left rising knee to body; plant forward with left, left hand
on top of his left shoulder, right arm circles counter clockwise and right
hammer fist to right side neck; right hand grab left side face and twist counter
clockwise, left hand push down on left shoulder, cross back left with right,
step back with left and kneel with left, twisting and pulling his back down on
right knee; circle right dropping. elbow counter clockwise to face, continue
circle with right tiger claw to face, and around to right hammer fist to heart
or right clavicle; stand up to natural stance, he falls to ground; shift counter
clockwise and drop left knee to throat.
C.) Step left with left, left hand catch his right, right low forearm strike to
right biceps; slip right hand between his right side and right arm, pull toward
chest, palm facing in; slide left forearm outside (and higher than) our right
arm, also pulling in, palm in; remove right arm to outside of his right arm and
grab back of our left hand, pin tightly to chest; step forward left 45° with
left to seisan, cross back with right, pivot to fighting stance, right rising
knee to solar plexus; cross back 45° left forward with right and pivot to bow;
place chest on top of hands and force down against his shoulder joint, kneel
with left; adjust to pin.
D.) Step right with right, sweep down and outside with right to left inside
forearm; pin his left forearm to right forearm with left hand, continue motion
with right to small circle lock; cross back right with left, pivot and kneel
with right.
8.
Flashing Wings. (ABC). On
knees.
A.) Right knee. Right downward horizontal forearm to thigh (stopping it),
left hand to guard, continue to right vertical position (deflecting it left);
rotate right arm counter clockwise, elbow up, right knife hand to groin; double
palm heel `fan’ strike (left to right ankle, right to right upper knee) to knock
him down.
B.) Right front snap kick. Right hammer fist strike, palm up, to kick;
pivot body to rear, right back knuckle strike to groin; place both hands on
ground, right rear kick to groin or body.
C.) Right front snap kick. X-block, right on top; grab heel with right,
toes with left, twist clockwise, knee down; rise to standing, right front snap
kick to groin, back of left thigh; let go of foot, plant forward with right to
fighting stance, double downward punches to kidneys; step forward with left,
right heel stomp base of spine.
9.
Attacking the Wall. (ABC).
Right push or grab.
A.) Attack. Step forward with right to cat, same time: with left forearm
horizontal, strike solar plexus with downward twisting left knife hand, right
uppercut, below knife hand.
B.) Not so close. Start as `A’; same time: left palm heel to right
biceps, right uppercut to face.
C.) Farther. Parry down with left; step forward with right to fighting
stance, right shoulder punch to right shoulder.
10.
Side Hand Staff. (AB). Side
club attack.
A.) Step forward with right to cat, left palm heel to right biceps, right 45°
palm heel strike to solar plexus.
B.) Backhand. Step forward with left to fighting stance, double knife
hand strike, right to wrist, left to Tw-10; cross back 90° left with right,
catch his right wrist with right, left hand on right elbow; pivot to bow, swing
him around, kneeling with left, force him down.
11.
Kung Fu Wrist. (ABCD). Double
wrist grab.
A.) Step forward with right to cat, grab left wrist with left, twist right
wrist, free and right punch face.
B.) Circle both arms 360° counter clockwise to dislodge his hold, left hand on
top of right; step forward with right to cat, double punch, left to face, right
to solar plexus.
C.) Step forward with right to cat, lower body, place left inside forearm
against back of his left hand, pull to body with left, right hand pushes against
his left fingers; right hand against stomach, circle body down, up, and forward,
lock his left elbow straight and force his arm up; extend his left fingers with
right wrist, twist right hand clockwise, catch his left fingers; twist his left
hand counter clockwise, catch back of his wrist with left; bring right forearm
over his left forearm, cross back 45° right forward with left, kneel with right,
take down.
D.) Step forward with left to cat, twist right palm up and push right arm
forward 45° left, his left hand on top of his right forearm, twist right hand
palm down and toward his right wrist, bring left elbow up, twist left hand
clockwise, opening up his right hand; rotate left elbow down and left hand
counter clockwise, catch his right fingers with left; finish like “Sleeves of
China, Set III ‘C’”.
12.
Opponents Front and Back. (A1-3,BCD).
Two attackers.
A1.) Back grabs shoulders, front right punch. Same time: left parry right
punch, right hammer fist groin or body, right front snap kick to groin; right
rear kick to groin, right palm heel or tiger claw to face.
A2.) Rear too close. Same as ‘A1’ to front snap kick; stutter step left,
right side kick to knee or body, right palm heel or tiger claw to face.
A3.) Rear too close. Same as ‘A1’ to front snap kick; right rear kick to
miss, right palm heel tiger claw to face; sweep right leg forward against back
of legs, double palm heels to chest.
B.) Back grabs shoulders, front right punch. Left inward parry right
punch; step forward with right, right side elbow to face; pivot 180º, left elbow
to right side ribs, left hand to guard; (back advances to re-grab) step forward
to fighting stance, right rising elbow to chin; pivot right leg to dropping
stance, right hammer fist to groin.
C.) Bearhug (fib), front right punch. Same time: trap block right punch,
right front snap kick groin; right tiger claw to face, plant right with right to
naihanchi; do “Bearhug (fib)”.
D.) Bearhug (pib), front punch. right front snap kick to groin, left
front snap kick to throat; do “Bearhug (pib)”.
13.
Striking Fang. (AB). Right
push, backhand, or grab.
A.) Step forward with left, left inward brushing parry, right middle knuckle
uppercut to Tw-12 or H-1; shift forward to bow, right side elbow to right ribs,
left hand to guard, shift to fighting stance, right back knuckle to kidney,
right reverse knife hand to groin.
B.) Miss. Continue motion, right arm circles clockwise to right wrist,
crane hook with right, cross back left with right, pivot 180° to bow, left
vertical forearm to right elbow; break elbow.
14.
The Mantis. (AB1-2,C). Right
push, punch, or grab.
A.) Far. Step forward with left to bow, left inward parry, right back
knuckle twist to nose; reverse 180°, right back knuckle to right kidney, left
hook to right ribs, continue through; reverse 180°, left back knuckle, right
uppercut to right ribs, continue through; reverse 180°, right-left circular
chops to right side of neck.
B1.) Close. Step forward with left to bow, left inward parry, right back
knuckle twist to nose; reverse 180°, right back knuckle to right kidney,
continue through; reverse 180°, left hand pull his right arm down, right elbow
to face.
B2.) Start as ‘B1’; left elbow to right ribs; reverse 180°, left back knuckle to
heart point, right elbow to face.
C.) Start as ‘B1’; right elbow to right ribs; reverse 180°, right-left circular
chops to right side of neck.
15. Arm Sweep.
(A1-4,B1-2,C1-2). Two hand push.
A1.) High. Step back with left to cat, double outward crane parry and
catch wrists; pull arms hard to hips, right front snap kick to body; plant
forward with right to fighting stance, left hand to guard, right rising elbow to
chin; right tiger claw to face.
A2.) Start as ‘A1’; right arm figure 8 (back knuckle twist, back knuckle );
continue motion, right side elbow to left side of head, left palm to right side;
pivot right to dropping stance buckle right knee, hands to guard; right scoop
kick to groin, plant back with right to fighting stance; speed shift left leg
back; left 45° kick to left inside thigh.
A3.) Start as ‘A1’; maintain grip on right wrist, release left grip, swing right
inside forearm against his right inside upper arm nerve point; slip right hand
between his right side and right arm, pull toward chest, palm facing in; slide
left forearm outside (and higher than) our right arm, also pulling in, palm in;
remove right arm to outside of his right arm and grab back of our left hand, pin
tightly to chest; step forward left 45° with left to seisan, cross back with
right, pivot to fighting stance, right rising knee to solar plexus; cross back
45° left forward with right and pivot to bow; place chest on top of hands and
force down against his shoulder joint, kneel with left; adjust to pin.
A4.) Start as ‘A1’; plant forward 45º left with right, maintain grip on his
wrists; bring his arms overhead; cross back with left, pivot to fighting stance;
with pressure on his elbow cause him to flip onto his back.
B1. Low. Step back with left to cat, double inward scooping crane parry
and catch wrists; continue as ‘A1’.
B2.) Start as ‘B1’ to fighting stance, right arm figure 8 (hammer fist left jaw,
back knuckle right ); shuffle forward, right rising elbow to chin; right
dropping back knuckle to chin; pivot forward to bow, left tiger claw to face;
pivot to fighting stance, right uppercut tiger fist to throat.
C1.) High. Step forward with left to cat, double inward parry, cross his
left arm on top, like “Kung Fu Wrist ‘B’”, catch his right fingers with left;
finish like “Sleeves of China, Set III ‘C’”.
C2.) Low. Step forward with left to cat, double downward open hands
between his arms; circle to outside, catch wrists with tiger mouths, continue
motion and position his arms like ‘C1’, then finish.
16.
Wing Break.
(ABCD). Face down on ground.
A.) Step next to his right arm with the
left foot; slip right foot under his right arm, lift his arm with right instep
and release so his right hand is on the ground, elbow in air; right heel stomp
to his upper right arm to break.
B.) Start as ‘A’ except; slip left instep under his right forearm, hook at
wrist, right foot in crane stance; same time: reverse crane stance, right heel
stomp to his right elbow.
C.) Trying to get up. Sweep his right wrist with right foot; right side
kick to his head or ribs.
D.) On all fours. Step forward with left, right front shin kick to his
ribs (turning him on back); step forward right – left; right heel stomp to
heart.
17. Opening the Fan. (AB).
Right push, punch, or grab.
A.) Step forward with
left, right upward parry; pivot to fighting stance, left upward outward blocking
strike to right punch; shift forward to bow, right elbow to right ribs; pivot
180°, left elbow right back ribs, right hand to right side; pivot 180°, left
outward parry sweep and grab his right arm, right tiger claw face; adjust right
hand to throat grab; right front leg raise behind his body; right foot sweep
back of legs, takedown.
B.) Start as ‘A’ to right elbow strike; right front leg raise behind his body,
right back knuckle kidney, left hand to guard; right tiger mouth throat, left
hand outward circular parry and catch his right, right foot sweep back of legs,
takedown.
18.
Brush of Danger.
(AB). Right hook punch.
A.) Step forward 45°
left with left to low naihanchi; left hand guards left side of head, right arm
guard; pivot, to half bow stance, right uppercut to heart point (use forward
momentum of leg drive, body torque, lifting of the knees, and pelvic thrust);
rise to balls of feet, pivot 180°, drop body weight; 45° forearm strike to back
of neck with left.
B.) Step forward with left (under punch) to half bow, right side elbow strike to
chest; pivot 180°; right back hand hook to back of neck, pull down, left hammer
fist to kidney weight.
19.
The Manchu. Right
push, punch, or grab.
Step forward 45° left
with left to bow, left clockwise circular downward parry and catch right punch,
right counter clockwise circular downward forearm strike right elbow; right side
kick knee; plant forward; hook crook of arm with right pull up, reverse left
grip and rotate his right arm clockwise to arm lock; take down.
20.
Snapping Twig. (AB).
Right push, punch, or grab.
A.) Step forward with right to fighting stance, double knife hand strike forearm
and biceps; right knife hand to right side neck, left grab right wrist; speed
shift right leg back, right crane hook right elbow; pull back with right, push
forward with left, right round house knee to solar plexus; plant forward knee to
knee, left dropping. elbow to spine; pivot 180° knee to knee, right hammer fist
to kidney; pivot 180° to bow, left hammer fist to Gv-16; both hands on top of
head and push down, left knee to face.
B.) Elbow bends. Start as ‘A’ until pull back; rotate arm clockwise elbow
up; right knee to chest; continue as in ‘A’, -or- takedown; step back and pivot
180° to left knee.
